Monthly Training Program

The general aim of the program this year due to the large number of first time helms & crews is to start off slowly covering all the basics and general boat handling getting everyone up to speed as quickly as possible. Moving into 2008 and nearer to the big events we intend to focus on the finer points of boat racing and try to raise everyone's game yet further so they can achieve to the best of their ability in these events. Areas to be covered and dates will all be notified either by email or on the Class Notice Board within the club as we progress through the year.

The Boat & Class

The Frensham Pond Cadet fleet is one of the most competitive in the country. The club has Volvo RYA Champion Club status for youth sailing and the Cadet class is heavily involved with this. For more information see the Champion Club pages or the RYA youth site.

The Cadet is 3.2 metres in length and uses 3 sails - mainsail, jib and spinnaker. The boat is an established racing design for two novice/experienced junior sailors aged between 8 and 17 years old. In recent years low maintenance fibreglass versions have replaced the traditional wooden construction.

Prices vary from £200 for an old, wooden Mk1 or 2, which will need lots of loving care and attention, up to £3000 for a brand new fibreglass Mk4. Many older wooden boats are lovingly maintained to high competitive standards.

Numerous sailing superstars started in Cadets like Victoria and Emma Rawlinson, Sam Carter, Joe Glanfield, Adrian Stead, Nigel Barrow, Andrea Brewster, Pippa Wilson, Roger Gilbert and Nick Craig.

Many of our current cadet youths have been selected for Zone and National Squads. See the zone and national pages for their take on it all.
