Comet

The Comets at Frensham Pond sail in the Slow Handicap Class and in General Handicap races on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesday evenings. It is a single-handed, single sail boat of easily maintained GRP construction and is readily car-toppable on the smallest of cars. As a strictly one-design class, all boats are virtually identical, and it is not permissible to buy high-tech equipment to achieve racing success.
Being lighter and with less sail area than a Laser or Solo it is particularly suitable for smaller or less athletic sailors or both sexes and performs well on handicap in the light winds often experienced at Frensham Pond. If it does capsize it is easy to recover. There is a Mino rig available for the Comet for those who are particularly lightweight and prefer a smaller sail. The Comet Class also has a lively Open Meeting circuit with many events at clubs close to the M25 and further afield. An annual 3-day National Championship is arranged at a suitable club. In 1998 it was held at Frensham Pond and won by FPSC member Jake Sutton.
