Guildford Marine Frensham Frenzy
Sunday 9th March 2008
Frensham Pond's annual open Frenzy came of age with the highest quality fleet in the competition's seven year history.
The Frenzy, a pre-season rally sponsored by Guildford Marine, is popular with visiting sailors especially those following a long winter lay off.
The wind had moderated following the gusts of Saturday. Moderate breezes and bright sunshine were interspersed with wind shifts and blustery showers. Thirty four competitors came to the start line for the two race series. The Frenzy is a handicap pursuit event with slowest boats on Portsmouth number starting first and faster classes giving chase. Dominating the series were the four helms of the OK single-hander contesting the Frenzy as part of their travelling winter series. The morning race went to Terry Curtis, OK, from Upper Thames SC, with Keith Videlo, Solo, Frensham, second, Mike Edwards, OK, South Stafford SC third, fourth Dan Aller, OK, Waldringfield SC, with Frensham veteran member, Richard Hart in his Finn fifth.
Race two in the afternoon became a clean sweep; the OK class taking all four places with Terry Curtis winning again and Steve Cockerill in his Rooster 8.1 fifth.
Following a most enjoyable day competitors were in a mood for the traditional Frensham free tea. Presenting the prizes club commodore John Townsley welcomed Denise and Chris Grainger from Guildford Marine, the event sponsors. He thanked all who had worked so hard to make the Frenzy a success and especially race Officer Graham Howlett, Linda Whitney who handled the admin ashore, the event founder, Chris Ellis and Jane Marriott and her kitchen team.
