You have to say the Frensham SC Model Yacht Group do it in style - with our lunchtime music entertainment - Keith Parrott played the banjo and was accompanied by a friend on guitar. They set the scene for an excellent picnic that we all contributed too - the chaps carrying out maintenance on the club outboard's that day thought we had a CD playing until told otherwise - thank you to Keith and his musical colleague. Despite being overcast, fourteen (yes 14!) model yachts took to the water to complete a six race event after the picnic lunch. This reinforced the view that the success of our group is that, whatever you sail, you are welcome to come and join us to either free sail or race - and this was proved again when friends from Southwater Dabblers came with a selection of model yachts.

Between 14:00 & 16:00hrs we managed six one lap races with a range of model yachts from Footy, Bottle Boat, One Metre (IOM), Six Metre and 10 Rater. The winner was Ian Garner (10 Rater), second was Paul Brooks (IOM), third Roger Pearce (Marblehead) and this proves that our handicapping system works well.

After racing it was time for tea and biscuits in the clubhouse. It was good to see our chairman Charles Smith returning to the fold after his knee operation also there was another founder member Pat Cushing plus the three Shelties who, for a change, were remarkably quiet!

We shall most certainly be holding this type of mid-week invited event again.

August 9th - August 13th 2010

New for the 2010 season the club is running a family orientated sailing week with the emphasis on fun both on and off the water for all ages and abilities.

The program will include:-

Fun races

Speed challenges

Off the water activities ( hopefully including an afternoon with the ranger and possibly a trip to Alice Holt activities centre)

Evening events ( such as wide games, BBQ's and "Frensham's got Talent")

Frensham week evening race Championships (an evening race every day)

It is hoped that we can arrange camping very close to the club so that you can make a week of it, and not have to worry about driving home, watch this space!!!!!

The costings of this week are still being planned but we aim to make it as inexpensive as possible and we hope to run it on a self help basis.

In order to make the week work we are looking for volunteers to help organise this, Tim Hemsley has taken overall responsibility for the Week and Jeff Dolton will look after the money side but we still need help sourcing a campsite, planning the evening events, first aid cover and the Kitchen. If you can help please let Tim know.

In order to gauge the interest in this event please without commitment at this stage please let Tim know if it is something that you would consider, if interest is too low then it won't happen, so let me know, it's going to be great!!!!

See you on the 9th of August

The Club Celebration Day was a great success and a very fitting way of marking the Club’s achievement of RYA Club of the Year 2009. It was also an expression of thanks to all Club members who have worked so hard over the years to bring the Club to this position, and to the RYA, Waverley Borough Council and local organisations for their valued support.

We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Waverley, Councillor Pat Frost, the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Lucinda Fleming, Guy Malpas from the RYA and representatives from Farnham Sports Council and the Farnham and District Association for the Disabled.

Blessed with good weather and a very pleasant Force 3 breeze, the day was officially opened by the Mayor of Waverley, who first cut the Celebration Day cake, then sounded the start of the Club of the Year Pursuit Race, a race which will now become an annual fixture in the Club calendar.

And what a spectacle that was – with 50 boats representing all areas of the Club, including Cadets, Sailability, and Club and national champions. By the end, Nick Craig, UK Champion of Champions 2008, had hauled them all in and finished in first place to win the new ‘Club of the Year Pursuit Race’ trophy. Congratulations, Nick.

A very swift turnaround saw the start of the ‘Race of Champions’, with 9 former national champions battling it out in Access 303 dinghies. A fun event, but just as competitive as you would expect former champions to be. Congratulations to winner, Andy Shorrock, for mastering the conditions, boats and opposition.

The final race, the Children’s Pursuit Race, brought a colourful array of boats onto the water, including Optimists, helmed by some of our youngest sailors, Cadets, Toppers and Lasers. The Oppies were allowed water pistols to repel other approaching craft, but their broadsides were not sufficient to prevent Matthew and Ben Shorrock moving through the fleet and crossing the line first. Well done, Matthew and Ben.

Successes were celebrated at the prize-giving immediately after the racing and, although lowering cloud and a chill wind meant that, for some, a Picnic by the Pond became a picnic in the clubhouse, the festive spirit prevailed.

The festivities were concluded with a lively barn dance, in which the age difference between the children and adults was barely discernable, and in a marquee provided for the occasion, courtesy of ‘Intouchcards’ (aka. Andrew Kellard). Our thanks to Andrew for his generous sponsorship – and if you’re wondering what InTouchCards is all about, this website will reveal all: www.intouchcards.co.uk

And finally, our thanks to David Youll who, with the planning team, organised and coordinated the day’s events, and to all other Club members who so generously gave of their time and effort to help create such a day of fun and celebration.

Overall Results:

Club of the Year Pursuit Race

1st Nick Graig (Phantom)

2nd Marcus Young & Alex Philpott (Cadet)

3rd Richard Hart (Finn)

The Race of Champions

Winner Andy Shorrock

The Children’s Pursuit Race

1st Matthew & Ben Shorrock (Cadet)

2nd Stuart Hudson (Laser 4.7)

3rd Jack Hardie & Alex Philpott (Cadet)

The 10 Hour Race is the largest and most popular annual sailing and social event in the Frensham calendar and is coming soon! The format of the day will be as in previous years. The Race itself will run from 9am through to 7pm, with team changes every 50 minutes.

There will also be the usual wide range of ‘on-shore’ attractions – good food, real ales & Pimms. The ‘Hot Five plus 1’ jazz band will entertain us from 6pm and the BBQ will be served from around 6.45pm. More details are given on the enclosed poster. The Race Prize-giving will take place at 8.15pm, to be followed immediately afterwards by the Winter Prize-Giving for the 2008-09 season.

Please note that you do not have to be an ‘ace’ sailor to participate. We are looking for teams of mixed ability, as the race has traditionally been about having fun, with most teams consisting of at least 3 crews: one of good ability, one of moderate ability and one relatively inexperienced. Your Class Captain will help you make up a team or allocate you to a team if you so wish. We have also invited several other local clubs to send a team; let’s hope they’re up for the challenge.

Each year, the Club uses the event to raise money for a good cause. This year, the appeal is in aid of a Sensory Garden at The Ridgeway School, Farnham. The sensory garden is designed to give a tactile environment for children with severe disabilities to experience the outdoor environment and to learn new communication skills; a very worthwhile beneficiary.

A sponsor form can be downloaded here. Please use it if you can! There is a prize for the individual who raises the most money. Further forms are available on request.

So put the date in your diary, invite your family & friends and book your tickets now using this form!! Please fill in the forms for Race entry and/or Hog Roast/BBQ tickets as soon as possible. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Frensham Pond Sailing Club’

If you need further information, please contact: Jane Curwen, Administrator, 01252 794828

Look forward to seeing you on the water!

Regrettably, in the absence of a Social Secretary, we have had to cancel the Club Christmas Party which was scheduled for Saturday 6th December. We have not, however, cancelled Christmas, and the festive spirit will be maintained with the traditional mulled wine and mince pies on Saturday 27th December, the Club Summer Prize-Giving Day ( Remember - no sailing on Boxing Day) and on New Year’s Day. Come along and enjoy the sailing and good company

As you may now be aware, Lois Hudson has stepped down from her role as Social Secretary on the General Committee and from temporarily running the Club kitchen.

Lois will be a hard act to follow. She has, as we have come to expect, worked tirelessly to improve the social activities at the Club, arranging a variety of enjoyable events on a regular basis, and providing a cheerful welcome for visitors and members alike. It was typical of her generosity and willingness to support the Club that she volunteered to help run the kitchen in recent months.

A big thank you, therefore, to Lois from the General Committee, on behalf of all FPSC members, for her considerable contribution to the Club.

Situation Vacant!

In Lois’s absence, we now, of course, have a vacancy on the General Committee for a new Social Secretary. So, if you are interested in developing the social side of the Club and in making a contribution to the Club as a whole, please contact me, or any member of the General Committee, who will be happy to discuss this with you. Without doubt, the better our social scene, the more enjoyable the Club for everyone. I hope to hear from you.

John Townsley, Commodore
