Frensham Pond Laser Open Meeting - 23 September 2012
The forecast was dire - lots and lots of rain, plus wind gusts up to 32mph. No doubt off-putting to travellers and home fleet alike. The reality was somewhat different - lots of rain in the morning with at times a shortage of wind - almost dry in the afternoon with much stronger wind but by no means unsailable and nowhere near 32mph.
Our race officer Andy Shorrock kept us on our toes with some interesting and (to me) unusual courses.
Amongst the four 4.7 sailors the real battle, with close racing, was between Jack Hardie (Frensham) and Cameron Allen (Emsworth). Jack dominated until Cameron finally managed to overhaul him in the 4th and last race, but by then Jack had won the meeting.
For the Radials we were honoured to have Steve and Sarah Cockerill from Hill Head amongst the six sailors. The Radials shared the start line with the Standard fleet and Steve in particular pushed the Standards hard, especially in the first race. The Cockerills having to miss the fourth race allowed John Haine (Frensham) to creep into second place in the results, separating Steve and Sarah.
The Standards were the largest fleet, with 11 sailors. Here the battle at the front was between Clive Eplett and Nick Hudson, both of Frensham. For them it all depended on the last race - when Nick tacked on to port off the start line into a starboard-tack boat (me) and he called it a day, contenting himself with second place. In third place was Steve MacQueen from Itchenor, although I think of him as a Frensham member as he appears on our Honours Boards.
