Sailing for Disabled Members

The GC is pleased to announce a return to sailing for the Club's disabled sailors from Saturday 20th February, continuing every Thursday and Saturday thereafter.

Organised sport for the disabled is permitted by the Government as a specific exemption from the current lockdown regulations because of the disproportionate impact on the health and wellbeing of disabled people. The Club has received support to organise this from both the RYA and Waverley Borough Council.

Further information is attached. It explains why this activity is important for disabled people and includes details of how the Club's disabled members can participate.

The GC shares everyone's frustration at not being able to sail at the Club but asks that non-disabled members respect the needs of our disabled members and continue to understand that the Club remains closed to them. Rest assured that we aim to open for all members at the very earliest opportunity.

Sailability Activity Centre

As reported in the Commodore’s Newsletter in November 2020, Sailability were delighted to receive the GC’s support for our proposed ‘Activity Centre’ project. Located on the grassed berthing area facing Jetties 6 - 8, the facility will comprise a fully accessible multi-functional area, together with two integrated accessible toilets.  We are confident that this significant project will be viewed by members as a very positive development for the Club.  It will build upon the mutually beneficial relationship established between Sailability at Frensham and the Club as a whole over the past 20 years.  An outline planning application has very recently been submitted to Waverley Borough Council.  Please visit the Sailability "Welcome" page on the website for further information.

Website Homepage Photo Competition

You will now notice that the Homepage Club photos have been updated and I would like to say a big thank you to all who sent in photos. You will see that the photos are of a high quality and a great representation of both the range of activities and the environment at the club.

I received over 150 photos that were taken recently and it was difficult to reduce them to 20, in fact there are 26 displayed.

The good news is that all the photos received will be put in the Club archive photo section.

You may recall that I was going to choose a winning photograph, that is a quality photo that represented the Club’s vibrant activities to both members and the outside world and It took me a while to select a winner. Eventually I chose the photo of the Cadet fleet flying on a broad reach in a strong breeze. The reason I have chosen this is because it represents a lot of what the Club is about and that is coaching youngsters to get to a high racing standard by their mid teens. The photograph was taken by Stephanie Videlo.

Well done Steph and you have won a bottle of Bordeaux.

Thank you again and let’s look forward to a great 2021 sailing.

Chris
